Old Fashioned Mothers Day – Idea #3

If you still don’t know what to do for your mom on Mothers Day, then I have one more idea. (There are several more things going on this weekend, but I’ve run out of time to write about them. ☺) How about you treat your mom to a nice brunch?

Moms love brunches. Something about the combination of lunch and breakfast speaks to a mom’s soul. (Okay, maybe that is a bit over-kill, but brunch is still a great idea.) And Kauai Beach Resort is having a $40 a person brunch this Mothers Day from 9am to 1pm.

Kauai Beach Resort may be overpriced when you’re looking for a place to stay, but Chef Mark Sassone is an amazing chef. That’s why I know that his menu for the Mothers Day Brunch is sure to be wonderful. So why not enjoy it?

You can call the restaurant today and make your reservations. Have a great Mothers Day and enjoy your brunch!

Mothers Day Plan #2

If your mom is young, vibrant, and a fan of live music, how about spending Friday night at Small Town Coffee in Kapaa? This event is called Strings & Wings and will be featuring original music by local musicians! Plus, it’s free to attend.

This is not a Mothers Day show, but it will be a great opportunity to enjoy the musical stylings of Emma Lee and Heidi Holmes while drinking hot (or cold) beverages and chatting with your mom. Now, I’ll admit that this is an event that I thought would be great for my own mom, a woman who gave me my love for live music and who loves the opportunity to sit and chat for hours. And if your mom is anything like mine, then this is the event for you.

Of course, if your mom is nothing like mine, then this might not be the right event for you. But don’t worry – there are more events happening this weekend that I will be happy to tell you about. So stay tuned!

Off Season

April 30th, 2012 by Emily

I’ve been asked a few times so far if Kauai has an “off season.” And I’ll admit that it’s a hard question for me to answer. Therefore, I have decided to answer it here and now. The answer is: yes and no.

Yes – Kauai does technically have an “off season” if you mean a time when there are fewer tourists that visit. For instance, we get a lot of tourists here in the summer when families don’t have kids in school. We also get a lot of traffic during Spring Break, when college students want to party in a tropical climate. And, strangely, we get quite a bit of holiday traffic, when people want to avoid cold weather and their in-laws. However, during the early fall months and the spring, we have fewer people visiting. So technically, these months would be the “off season.”

No – But Kauai is always lovely and always has stuff going on. There isn’t a week that goes by where events, luaus, festivals, and fun activities aren’t happening on our little island. The temperature of the water is always in the 70s, even in the winter. And the beaches are always beautiful with white sand and crystal clear waters. So technically, there isn’t an “off season,” if you mean a time of year when Kauai is less enjoyable to visit.

See why it’s a hard question to answer? On the plus side, for those of you who want to come to Kauai when there aren’t as many people visiting, you can come in the non-summer months (avoiding Spring Break to be safe). In fact, right now is a great time to come to Kauai. Spring Break has just ended and it isn’t quite summer yet. But it is spring, which means the tropical flowers are blooming, the waters are warm, the people are friendly, and the activities are frequent. Now is the perfect time to come and visit us… in our supposed “off season.” :)

Vacation Rental Areas

Anahola / Aliomanu

Okay, today let’s go for big, beautiful, and on the beach! When you’re looking for an Anahola Beach House with enough room for a large family or a private party, it pays to know about this bodacious beauty right on the sand. With seven bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and 5,000 square feet of opulent accommodations, you can get lost in this wonder of a rental. Plus, did I mention it was only a few hundred feet away from the water?

This comfortable beach house located at 4274 Poha Road has modern furnishings, a private courtyard, free wireless internet access, and an outdoor BBQ area complete with garden showers for rinsing off after some fun in the ocean. It is perfect for a large group of individuals or couples who are traveling together, especially if money is an issue. At $7,000 a week, you can either have a very large house all to yourself or you can invite everyone you know and make a party of it, splitting the cost between the lot of you.

The best part is that this house is on the east side of the island, giving you access to everything eastern Kauai has to offer, from Fern Grotto and the Kauai Museum to Kilohana Plantation and Kipu Falls. In fact, the east side also has Lydgate State Park, by far one of the best family beaches on the island. After renting this house, you can truly have a great time exploring the east side of the island right from your own backyard. What could be better?

Anini / Kalihiwai

Not long ago, I mentioned the Wade Beach House in one of my blogs. However, unlike the other rental homes that I’ve mentioned over the months, I didn’t give much information about this one. Therefore, here is some info about Wade Beach House, a lovely rental home in Kilauea.

With 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, you definitely won’t run out of room in this large and luxuriant home-away-from-home. In fact, with over 3,000 feet to work with, you could invite all of your friends along on your Kauai vacation. The home itself was built in 2006 and is located right on Anini Beach, so you have easy access to the water. Plus, there are several gorgeous windows in each room, giving you a great view of the waves, especially during whale watching season.

The interior of the home was designed with Brazillian Cherry hardwood floors, custom furnishings, and a private hot tub for relaxing after a long day of seeing the island. There are all of the usual amenities, like a washer/dryer, a plasma TV, and wireless internet. And there is a fully equipped kitchen for when you want to cook your own meals and enjoy a night at home.

Anini Beach is a wonderful location for a rental home, especially since it is ideal for snorkeling, paddle boarding, and swimming. These protected waters are clear and warm, owing to the tropical climate. And the sands are white and comfortable on your feet. Who wouldn’t want to stay on this prime piece of real estate?

Haena

When you are looking for a vacation rental, what things are most important to you? Is it a large television? Close proximity to hiking trails or the beach? Enough bedrooms to sleep 6-8 people? Internet access?

Well, for me it is all of those things. I want to truly relax in comfort when I rent a home, no matter where I am. And if you are the same way, then you will love Hale Luana, a vacation rental home in Haena.

Hale Luana is a large vacation rental that is comfortable and right on the beach. That’s right – the backyard is literally the sandy shore of the ocean. In the front yard, there is a large plot of beautiful green grass where your family or friends can play touch football or throw frisbees. And there is a large patio/deck/lanai furnished with chairs and a table, so you can lounge in the sun while enjoying the scene.

On the inside, this three bedroom – two bath house is fully equipped for your needs. First of all, the basics of the house are all there. Both bathrooms have showers, so you can vacation with just your family or invite a second family along and each use a separate bathroom. The rest of the house is fully furnished with comfortable beds, teak and bamboo furniture, and enough space for a large group to be comfortable. The kitchen is also well stocked with appliances and a marble countertop.

Additional amenities that you might enjoy are the high speed internet access, cable TV with DVD/VCR/CD player, gas grill, and outdoor shower to rinse off after a beach adventure. This beautiful and spacious home sleeps eight and would be ideal for a large family or group of friends. Plus, at only $4,500 a week for all of that, you would be hard pressed to find a better deal on the island.

Hanalei

Want to go to a concert for only $20? Are you going to be on Kauai for one of the Sundays this month? Do you enjoy Slack Key Guitar?

If you have answered yes to these questions, then come and visit the Hanalei Community Center at 3pm during a Sunday this month and listen to a slack key and ukulele concert. There will be a different theme each Sunday afternoon (this week is Menehune Moonrise), but the same two artists will be performing each time: Doug and Sandy McMaster. And every Sunday there will also be a free prize drawing for those in attendance.

According to what I’ve heard, everyone who is over the age of 12 has really liked it. There are typically quite a few positive comments from residents and visitors alike. Plus, the community center is right here in Hanalei, which makes it easy to find and simple to get to. (Turn left on Malolo Road, which is an access road on the edge of the soccer fields and Waioli Park. Malolo Road is about a block past the shopping center. The parking lot is on the left and is gravel. The building is brown.)

So come and hear some beautiful melodies and feel the music of Aloha.

Poipu

Okay, you remember me talking about Duffy Bishop last month and saying how excited I was about her concert? Well, I had every right to be excited; It was AWESOME!

However, I also know that some of you couldn’t make the concert. You had other plans, you weren’t on the island that day, or you simply didn’t believe me when I said how good it was going to be. And now maybe you regret not going, you are going to be on the island, or your sick of hearing me talk about how great it was.

Don’t worry – I have a solution for you.

Duffy Bishop is having ANOTHER concert! It will be this Friday (February 3rd) at 6:30 down in Poipu at Joes on the Green. Admission is only $20 and, if you go, I won’t have to bug you about it for the next several months. Sounds good, right? Seriously, if you missed her last show, make an effort to make it to this one.

Princeville

Are you staying in Princeville and want a fun and interesting show to attend? How about some belly dancing awesomeness? Well, if you are planning on being on Kauai on Saturday, April 21st, then you can see The Mirage staring Kalae of Shakti Dance Movement.

Kalae is a talented and beautiful artist with amazing moves. Her dances are like fluid motion set to light on the stage. Plus, she’s really nice. You will truly enjoy this show and you’ll get to see many of the other belly dancers on the island (who happen to be in the Garden Nile Belly Dance Troupe) as well.

The show starts at 7pm at the Church of the Pacific in Princeville. If you want a good seat, however, you should come by 6:30 when the doors open. Tickets are available on the Garden Nile Belly Dancer’s website for $10 apiece, though the price will be $15 at the door.

And, if you really enjoy yourself and want to try some great dance moves yourself, Kalae will be giving a Belly Dance Workshop the next day: April 22nd! You can register for that class as well on the Garden Nile website.
